A Premier Pediatric Trauma Center

There’s something called the “golden hour” in trauma care, according to Jose Prince, MD, director of Pediatric Trauma at Cohen Children’s. The first hour after injury is when the most effective treatments can be provided. That’s why Cohen Children’s Medical Center is home to the region’s only free-standing emergency department designed exclusively for children. The Rudolph Pediatric Emergency Center – one of only three Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Centers in New York – treats close to 60,000 children each year. Facilities like this one are how Cohen Children’s is able to provide critical to the most seriously injured children, faster.

Operating Rooms Designed Specifically for Children

More than 8,000 pediatric surgeries are performed by Cohen Children’s surgeons in adult operating rooms in other hospitals, and the demand for these specialty procedures is growing. That’s why we’re creating a new Pediatric Surgical Operating Complex that will be designed specifically to meet children’s unique needs and equipped for state-of-the-art surgeries. This revolutionary surgical center will not only allow even the most complex pediatric surgeries to occur right here on Long Island, but will attract more extraordinary surgeons to join our dedicated team at Cohen Children’s further ensuring that our kids – and yours – are getting the absolute best care.

The Real Story: Donovan Maldonado

Thirteen-year-old Donovoan Maldonado was walking home from school one day when he was hit by a car. The injuries were serious: traumatic brain injury, ruptured spleen, and several broken bones. He was rushed to Cohen Children’s Medical Center, and was immediately examined by a full team of orthopedic, vascular surgery, trauma surgery and neurosurgery specialists. They quickly devised a plan and went to work to help him survive.

His mother, Laura, recalls the scene: “I just remember everyone working on him so rapidly. They saved his life.” Donovan remained in a coma for almost a month. Then, slowly, he started moving again. About six months after the accident with the help of rehabilitation specialists at Cohen Children’s, Donovan regained his ability to speak. His strength and resilience continue to astonish and inspire his family, his therapists, and his entire medical team.

Donovan’s story and so many others illustrate the need for the top-quality trauma care that Cohen Children’s provides so close to home.
